The Onslow Department of Social Services administers a number of
public assistance programs and services. The object is to help
individuals and families with problems that cannot be handled
alone. Government funded services and programs for the poor are
offered. Some services require a fee; however, most are free to eligible
individuals.

The following primary programs are
offered:
MEDICAL ASSISTANCE - pay for health care for eligible people
through Medicaid.
FOOD STAMPS - administered by the agency for the US
Department of Agriculture, help qualified families buy food. Call (c)

SURPLUS COMMODITIES - assist low-income families with food needs
through the distribution of USDA-donated foods.
SUPPORTIVE SERVICE AND
COUNSELING - enable eligible families or individuals to maintain and enhance
functioning levels.
AID TO FAMILIES WITH DEPENDENT CHILDREN - provides
for qualified children deprived of parental care and support by death, physical
or mental incapacity, or the continued absence from the home of one or both
parents, or the unemployment/underemployment of parents.
CHILD SUPPORT
ENFORCEMENT - finds parents not living with their children and obtains - through
court action, if necessary - financial support for those

ENERGY ASSISTANCE -
administered only in the fall, helps low-income families pay winter heating

DAY CARE FUNDS FOR
CHILDREN - are available for eligible working parents in certified day-care
centers and through individual arrangements. For more information

OTHER TYPES OF
SERVICES PROVIDED INCLUDE:
PROTECTIVE SERVICES FOR ADULTS - are offered
for people older than 18 who are physically or mentally
incapacitated. Social Workers investigate cases of abuse, neglect and
exploitation. Eligibility for state abortion funds, state maternity
home funds, and sterilization funds is determined by the Adoption

CHILD PROTECTIVE
SERVICES handles child-abuse and child-neglect cases and assists families in

FAMILY
INTERVENTION AND TREATMENT provides counseling and support when parents are
unable or willing to properly care for their children. The department offers
foster care service and substitute homes for children who cannot remain in their
own homes.
PEERS, is The Parent, Preschool, Education, Empathy, Rapport
and Support Program. PEERS aims to strengthen family relationships and eliminate
child abuse through counseling, education and training in parenting and stress

ADOPTION SERVICES
assists birth parents with making a plan to parent or release a child for
adoption, placing agency children for adoption through recruitment efforts, and
supervising agency, independent, step-parent and relative adoptions until

Assistance with placement of adults in rest or nursing homes or

the visually impaired of all ages.
JOBS program provides education, job
skills training, job development to assist AFDC recipients become
