History:  Camp Lejeune had its beginnings in the early 1940's when a selection board decided on the New River area of North Carolina as the most ideal location for a new Marine training base.  The new facility met all the requirements for an east coast division training center to include being located near two deep water ports, Morehead City and Wilmington. Construction for the new camp began in April 1941, and for its aviation counterpart, nearby Cherry Point, in December of that year. In December 1942, the installation was named in honor of the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps, Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune.

To help prepare warfighters for combat and humanitarian missions abroad, Camp Lejeune takes advantage of 156,000 acres, 11 miles of beach capable of supporting amphibious operations, 98 maneuver areas, 34 gun positions, 50 tactical landing zones, a state-of-the-art training facility for Military Operations in Urban Terrain, and 78 live fire ranges including the Greater Sandy Run Training Area.

There are five major Marine Corps, one major Navy command and a Coast Guard command aboard Camp Lejeune not counting Marine Corps Base (MCB) itself; which owns all the real estate, operates entry level and career level formal schools, and provides support and training for tenant commands.

Camp Lejeune with its various satellite camps, housing and training areas, and New River Air Station is the largest concentration of Marines and Sailors in the world.  From the young man or woman reporting aboard for their first assignment to the seasoned veteran, from the dense foliage of woodland cover to sandy beaches and ocean front training area, Camp Lejeune is truly "Home of Expeditionary Forces in Readiness.

Employment for spouses is not easy to obtain.  Most jobs are in the service industry and pay minimum wage.

The base and surrounding community is home to an active duty, family member, retiree and civilian employee population of nearly 150,000 people. The base generates almost $3 billion in commerce each year, coming from payrolls and contracts to support the structure required to train and equip our modern Marines.
