Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP)
The Exceptional Family Member Program is a mandatory enrollment program for families who have special needs members.  The program covers members with long term medical and special education needs and ensures assignment consideration of those needs when transferring.  EFM is for persons who meet the criteria:
  Is enrolled in DEERS
Has a physical, emotional, intellectual or other  disability
  Has long term chronic illness
Has long term special education needs
Residing in the same household and transferring with the  sponsor
Enrollment at least nine months prior to PRD

The benefits to the sponsor enrolled in the EFMP are:
Early return from an overseas tours is less likely
Needless family separations are avoided
Humanitarian assignments are minimized
Hardship discharges can be avoided

Most importantly, the Navy can ensure the special needs  of each exceptional family member are properly addressed
