A privately owned vehicle (POV) is any motor vehicle owned by, or
on a long-term lease to, an active duty member or his/her family member for the
primary purpose of providing personal transportation (Joint Federal Travel
Regulation (JFTR), Appendix A).
Pamphlets on shipping and storing your
POV (includes listing of ports with contact information) may be obtained from
your local Transportation Management Office. Alternatively, you may
obtain a copy on-line from the Joint Personal Property Shipping Office website
(see contacts/links).
If you are relocating to the Air Force District
Washington from overseas and are shipping your POV, please contact your Traffic
Management Office at your current duty station to learn about your entitlements
and any restrictions that may apply.
You should also visit
the website, "Where is my POV" (see contacts/links). From this site
alone, you can obtain information on vehicle transport status, directions to the
drop off and pick up locations (Vehicle Processing Centers or
VPCs. Note - The most favorable port servicing the National Capital
Region is Baltimore, Maryland), turn-in and pick up requirements, vehicle
storage status, the most frequently asked questions and so
forth.
To pick up your vehicle, you will
need:
1. To contact the VPC for official confirmation that
your vehicle is available for pick up.
2. A photo
identification (valid driver's license/Military ID).
3. Your
copy of the Vehicle Inspection and Shipping Form, DD Form
788.
4. A power of attorney if someone other than the service
member is picking up the vehicle.
Arrive no less than one hour before
closing time, as you will have to accomplish some paperwork, inspect the
vehicle, etc.
