Bolling AFB is located in the Southeast section of Washington DC, on the east bank of the Potomac River. To get to Bolling AFB, take The Bolling AFB exit 2 from I-295. I-295 is accessible from any of the other major Interstate highways, I-95, I-495 (the Beltway) or I-395. Because of its proximity to the Pentagon, Capitol Hill, and the White House, Bolling's men and women proudly accept their responsibility as a showcase for the Air Force.
HISTORY
The base, originally named Bolling Field, officially opened 1 July 1918, and was named in honor of the first high-ranking air service officer killed in World War I, Colonel Raynal C. Bolling. Bolling's early years chronicled the growth of the entire US Air Force and served as a proving ground for the new air service as it spread its wings. Its first mission provided aerial defense of the capital and accommodated pilot proficiency. During World War II, Bolling served as a training and organization base for personnel and units going overseas. It became the aerial gateway to the nation's capital. In 1962, the last fixed-wing aircraft left Bolling. This changed Bolling's role to that of a support base. Today as the home of the 11th Wing, known as "The Chief's Own," Bolling continues to be the keeper of the heritage for the entire US Air Force.
MISSION
The three primary missions of the 11th wing are: 1) to provide operating and logistical support for Bolling AFB, Bolling AFB tenant units, the Pentagon, and the Air Force Units in the National capital region; 2) Provide Ceremonial, musical, protocol and funeral support for Arlington National Cemetery and a six-state region, and 3) provide medical and dental services at Bolling and in the Pentagon. The headquarters for the Air Force District of Washington (AFDW) is also located on Bolling AFB.
