A California resident on active duty must have in possession a
current, not expired, California driver's license.
A non-resident on
active duty must have in his possession either a current, not expired,
California driver's license or a valid dirver's license issued by your state of
residence. The same applies for your dependents.
Military
members and dependents must possess either a Class M California driver's license
or a driver's license from the state of residence for a
motorcycle.
Insurance - Every driver or owner of amotor vehicle in
California MUST have automobile insurance with a MINIMUM coverage of $15/30
thousand liability and $5000 property damage or a surety bond in the same
amount.
Former Duty Station Info
Driver's
License - If you obtained a driver's license in the state
of a former duty station (other than California) it must be replaced with one
issued by California or your state of residence WITHIN 10 DAYS of entering
California.
A written test is always required. However, the DMV
usually will not require a driving test.
Out of State
Registration -
(1)It is necessary to carry the
registration certificate for your car or motorcycle if your home state, such as
California, requires that it be carried.
(2) Out of State registration is
valid if the vehicle is currently registered in the owner's state of residence
or last duty station.
(3) Out of State Registration is not valid is a
military member purchases a vehicle from a nonresident, unless the vehicle is
immediately registerd in the purchaser's state of residence or
California.
(4) Nonresident Military Registrationn Active Duty members
may register their vehicles in California under this special provision at a
reduced fee provided the member, not a dependent, is
listed as the primary owner.
California has ZERO TOLERANCE LAWS for
drivers under age 21 with a blood alcohol reading of 0.01% or higher on a PAs
device. For drivers of any age driving a vehicle with a
blood alcohol reading of 0.08% or higher is in violation of
23152(b) CVC.
