DRIVER'S LICENSES: New residents, excluding military
personnel, must apply for a new driver's license within 30 days of establishing
residency. Holders of valid out-of-state licenses are required to take a vision
test and show proof of liability insurance that has Louisiana coverage.
Louisiana requires a minimum of $10,000/$20,000 coverage on bodily injury and
$10,000 on property damage.
Other applicants must be 17 years or older
for an unrestricted license, have a certified birth certificate, a social
security card and a parent's signature (if 17 years or younger). Those 16 years
old may apply for an intermediate license, which allows them to drive
unsupervised from 5 a.m-11 p.m. if they remain free from accidents or seat belt
or moving violation citations. Those 15 years old can obtain a "learners'
license" permit, which allows them to drive when supervised by a licensed adult
21 years or older or a licensed sibling 18 years or older. The cost of a license
is $22.50 and must be paid in cash.
