Barksdale Gate Information
Barksdale currently operates four gates for admittance onto the base. Only two of these gates operate on a 24 hour basis. The others are manned during peak travel hours for personnel employed here.
At the end of the Shreveport-Barksdale bridge is the west gate, this is the main gate to the base. Manned by our elite Security Forces personnel, this gate is the point at which visiting individuals are granted access via temporary pass to Barksdale AFB. This is the first of the 24 hour manned gates.
At the end of Northgate Rd. you will find the other 24 hour gate. This is the north gate. This is the easiest way to get to the Barksdale Lodging office, for those who are in need of temporary lodging. The combination of this and the west gate are the only allowed entrance for the air show, which is hosted at Barksdale in May of each year.
The first of the part-time gates is located just off of Holiday Rd., in Bel Air subdivision, found just to the south of the base on Barksdale Blvd. This gate operates during the hours of 5 a.m. to 11 p.m., allowing those who live there to bypass the congestion of the North and West gates during peak traffic hours.
The last of Barksdale's four gates is the East Gate, which is located off of Industrial Dr., on the northeast side of the base. This gate is intended to service those individuals residing in either of the two housing areas located on the east reservation and for those who live the subdivisions to the north of the base. Because of the relatively low volume of traffic, this gate is only open weekdays during the most demanding traffic periods.

Visit your Family Support Center for more detailed information regarding the following topics:
BEFORE YOU MOVE - take care of the following issues:
. Receive relocation counseling and/or attend a Smooth Move seminar. Check with you local Family Support Center.
. Sponsorship - Remember to contact your sponsor if he/she has not made contact prior to your arrival. Your sponsor will send you a sponsor package, answer your questions about Barksdale AFB and the local area, and help you and your family settle in. If you are unable to contact your sponsor, contact your orderly room for assistance using the information available under the Major Unit Listings heading or the Military Personnel Flight Customer Service. See Location-Overview for details on obtaining a sponsor.
. Self Move, formerly called a DITY move, allows a member to get paid for transporting some or all of their household goods, rather than the government arranging transportation. Pre-authorization is required and should be obtained from the member's servicing TMO at the losing installation. Member is paid based on the weight and distance of the items transported, as compared with what the government cost would have been. This is considered earned income and is taxed at 28%. There is no minimum weight required; self-move can occur in any type of vehicle. Contact TMO for authorization and details.
. Relocation offers an excellent opportunity to clean and organize your household! Remember to check with your local Family Support Center on the availability of a local Airman's Attic to receive your donated goods.
. Inventory your household goods. It is always wise to maintain a good inventory; in the event of a catastrophe, loss, damage or theft, you have proper documentation to support any claim you may need to make with insurance or at the base legal office. This is particularly important with regard to relocation.
. Notify your utility companies of your pending move. Make sure to leave a forwarding address for the final bill and for any deposit to be returned to you. Ask for a letter of credit.
. Notify child care facilities and schools or your pending move.
. Provide change of address information to friends, family, subscriptions, all medical/dental/veterinarian providers, schools, insurance companies, all service companies, etc.
. Obtain pet records, particularly documentation of rabies and bordatella vaccinations.
. Notify your civilian employer of pending move. Obtain copies of all work records and training received. Ask for a letter of reference. In some cases it may be appropriate to request a leave of absence, rather than resign.
. Make sure your vehicles are "road-ready."
. Hand-carry all family member medical and school records.
. Permanent party enlisted members should apply for Military Family Housing PRIOR to arrival at Barksdale (See Housing category for more information).
. Permissive TDY for house-hunting MAY be granted by your current organization - up to 10 days. Members who do not use permissive TDY MAY be authorized up to 8 days for house-hunting upon their arrival. This applies only to permanent party members. Check with your sponsor/supervisor for specific requirements and details for authorization in your situation.
IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS TO HAND CARRY:
1. At LEAST 10 copies of your orders
2. Birth Certificates (or certified copy)
3. Marriage Certificate
4. Copy of advance travel pay or allowances paperwork
5. All moving paperwork including: inventory, TMO information, Self-Procured Move paperwork, and all receipts associated with moving
6. Employment records or resume of civilian family members
7. Medical/dental records from your previous duty station - entire family
8. Immunization records for all children and all active-duty members
9. School records/transcripts for children and adults
10. Pet medical and immunization records
11. RECOMMENDATION: Letters of credit from utilities companies (telephone, electric, etc; may result in waiver for deposits)
Note: "If you get married before you PCS, you MUST inform your commander and follow the procedures exactly as you are given them. The military WILL NOT PAY for travel and housing of your spouse if you do not follow the proper procedures."
TRAVEL PLANNING:
. It is important to make temporary lodging reservations early.
. Contact either your local Family Support Center or the Barksdale AFB Family Support Center for relocation planning.
. Make sure to keep all receipts - food, gas, lodging, pet expenses, etc - while in transit. Some receipts may be needed when you file your travel voucher upon your arrival. Some receipts may be needed when you file your taxes next year.
. Travel and Relocation Entitlements - Members may contact the finance office and/or the Traffic Management Office (TMO) to determine entitlements based on their exact situation. The Joint Travel Regulation (JTR) is the governing source on travel and relocation entitlements. On a "usual" PDS to PDS relocation, the government will normally provide or pay for transportation for the member and family from PDS to PDS; pay for lodging and meals along the way; provide or pay for lodging in the area of the old and new PDS while member is not in a permanent residence; pay Dislocation Allowance (DLA) to assist with the expenses of setting up a household; provide or pay for shipment of household goods from PDS to PDS, or from Home of Record to PDS.
REPORTING PROCEDURES:
The 24-hr arrival point at Barksdale AFB is located at The Barksdale Inn at 555 Davis Avenue West and is an excellent resource for assistance in contacting your sponsor and obtaining general information about the base.
If arriving during duty hours, contact your unit or squadron of assignment immediately upon arrival for in-processing. Have your hand carried records and orders with you. The orderly room staff will inventory your records and schedule your Right Start orientation briefing.
ATTENTION FIRST TERM AIRMEN:
Airmen arriving at Barksdale AFB should report to the Billeting Office, just inside the North Gate at 555 Davis Avenue, and notify their respective sponsor. Sponsors will meet arriving airmen, escort them to their unit personnel offices and then to the First Term Airmen's Center (FTAC). The FTAC is part of the Barksdale Enlisted Mentoring Center located in room 209 of Building 5345. Airmen are assigned to the FTAC for a total of 30 calendar days, including their squadron in-processing.
