The Federal Department of Defense agencies in the region have
been downsizing in recent years. This reduces the probability of
quick federal employment. DoD agencies are hiring but openings are
highly competative.
The Military Spouse
Preference program is available to most military spouses who transfer here with
their active duty sponsor.
Military One
Source is a 24 hour/7 days a week service available online or a telephone call
away that can answer any question on any topic at any
time.
There are several non-DoD federal agencies in
the Seattle area that occasionally have job openings available in various
positions. Underlying virtually all aspects of Kitsap County's economy is the
government. More specifically, the federal government. Its
size alone, in terms of employment, dwarfs all other
sectors. Further, because much work is contracted out, the government
is a strong underwriter of the services sector. Two of every five
jobs in the county are government jobs.
Of the county's entire payroll, one of every two dollars goes to a government
employee. (if the military was included, one in every two jobs would be with the
government).
Government employment is important to Kitsap County not only
because of jobs that it provides but also because they are "good" jobs that
provide a living wage.
