If you’re in the military and have a service member for a spouse, you already know that juggling the demands of two hectic careers isn’t easy. But dual military marriages can survive and thrive when couples learn techniques for balancing work and family life.
- Anticipate the hardships you may face. Long separations and difficult career decisions are just some of the challenges you will face as a military couple. Good communication early on will help you cope with these challenges when the time comes.
- Be prepared to switch roles. Couples need the flexibility to switch roles in order to accommodate both careers. For example, a deployment may force one spouse to take on more difficult family responsibilities.
- Take a proactive role in finding joint assignments. Each service branch has a program for assigning married couples to the same duty station or within 100 miles of each other. Experienced couples recommend taking a personal role in working with these program managers to help identify assignments that meet their goals.
