TAXES (North Carolina)

Onslow County Tax Office Ground floor of the Graham K. Eubank Building, 39 Tallman St., Jacksonville, NC 28540.  Telephone:  910-989-2200.

North Carolina residents are required by state law to list annually all personal and business personal property owned on 1 January.  The listing must be filed with the county tax office by 31 January of that year to avoid a 10 percent late listing penalty.

Personal property includes unregistered vehicles, boats and boat motors, mobile homes, income-producing farm equipment, business personal property and rental household personal property.

All registered motor vehicles in North Carolina will be taxed three months after registration is renewed or a new tag is purchased.  Motor vehicle taxes that are not paid on time will prompt a Department of Motor Vehicles block on the tag.

Active duty military personnel that are non-North Carolina residents are not required to list personal property.  However, North Carolina residents claiming Onslow County residency are required to list personal property.

Military dependents, residing in North Carolina with active-duty personnel and solely or jointly owning a motor vehicle, will be taxed three months after registration is renewed or a new tag is purchased.

Mobile homes, boats, boat motors, aircraft and untagged vehicles that are located in Onslow County must be listed whether individually or jointly owned by the Military dependent.

Not filing property tax listing forms by 31 January results in a 10 percent penalty.  The filing period begins on 2 January of each year.

Once a resident is on record with the tax office, he or she should receive an annual listing form by mail. First time listings are done at the Onslow County Tax Office.  Failure to receive a form does not relieve the taxpayer from an obligation to file on a timely basis.

IMPORTANT NOTICE to persons owning real property in Onslow County:  As of January 1995, the Tax Office automatically lists all real property at its current value. Listing abstracts will be mailed out for the listing of personal property.  However, improvements or additions to real property must be reported to the Tax Office by 31 January to avoid a 10 percent late listing penalty.
