Spouse Tip of the Week - Ten Ways Employers Are Recruiting Military Spouses

Source: Military Community and Family Policy (MC&FP) Weekly eNewsletter

  • In outreach materials, military friendly employers are telling spouses exactly how to self-identify as military spouses when applying for their job openings.  Check their human resource (HR) landing page within their corporate website for this important guidance.  It will help them find you easier in the stack of well qualified job applications.
  • Visit the MSEPJobs web portal.  There are thousands of jobs listed here by employers who want to recruit, hire, retain, and promote military spouses.  Many of these employers have successful military spouse employment continuity programs.
  • Spouse Employment Program Managers at the installation level are your subject matter experts on local employment conditions and networks.  Employers are working with them to publicize their job openings.  Visit MilitaryINSTALLATIONS to get their contact information.
  • Participate in "Hiring Our Heroes" Job Fairs sponsored by the national and local chambers of commerce and military affiliated organizations.  There are 100 job fairs scheduled this year in coordination with the White House "Joining Forces" campaign to support military service and family members.
  • Participate in Virtual Job Fairs.  Be ready for on-the-spot interviews and resume submissions.  Employers are ready to make job offers to well-qualified candidates.
  • Some employers have tailored Military Spouse Career Landing Pages on their websites.  Look for them.  These pages are special recruitment efforts designed to reach military spouses 24-7.
  • College and university career centers and veterans liaison offices know which employers are actively recruiting military spouses.  Go meet their career and employment counselors and check back with them throughout your job search.
  • Local Department of Labor Career One-Stop Centers, Veterans Service Organizations and Military Service Organizations also know which employers are actively recruiting military spouses.  Find points of contact within these organizations and make them part of your personal and professional network for career and employment opportunities.
  • Seek out other military spouses who work for your current employer and organizations where you do community service and volunteer work – schools, church, athletic clubs, special interest groups, etc.  Ask them to spread the word that you are seeking career and employment opportunities.  Be specific.  Tell them what types of jobs you are most interested in and give them your contact information.  The contacts you make may end up being with those who have hiring authority within their own organizations.  Networks are powerful!
  • Publicize your own military spouse career and employment success story using social media:  Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, TroopTube, Flickr, blogs, etc.  Use social media to "put your best foot forward" and tell others what you are looking for.  Employers are out there looking, too.  Ensure you always create a good "Internet image," so watch what you say, how you say it, and how you look in any pictures or videos you post.
