Local shopping malls vary from the very expensive to reasonable
depending on your budget. There are a number of second hand stores,
outlets, malls, plazas, flea markets, yard sales and arts & craft festivals
for your shopping needs.
SHOPPING:
Newcomers can walk into one
of over 5 malls or drive along the city's streets and feel right at home;
several national retailers are here. Unique, unusual, or locally
owned shops and boutiques are clustered in the area's older, historic
sections.

Anchor stores at the mall
include, Grand Sears, JC Penney, Kohl, and Valu City.
Discount
Stores:
North Chicago area have Wal-Mart stores, a Target
store, a Big Lots store and many more. There are several different
chains stores located throughout the Chicago-Milwaukee area.
Home Improvement Stores:
Menary's, ACE, and Home Depot are the
primary stores. There are also several hardware
stores.
FOOD:
Grocery Stores:
There are several
grocery stores off-base. Jewels, Piggly Wiggly, Dominick's Fine
Foods, and Pick 'n save are most frequently used by Great Lakes'
personnel.
Fast Food:
Most of the fast food chains
are represented in Chicago-Milwaukee
area.
Restaurants:
There are many restaurants
throughout Great Lakes area, both locally owned and chain and/or franchise
restaurants.

ALCOHOL PURCHASE:
Beer and wine are sold in the
grocery stores. Beer, wine, and all other types of alcohol are sold
in the liquor stores. Legal age to purchase or consume any alcohol is
21 years.
SALES TAX:
The sales tax in the Chicago-Milwaukee
area varies from 5.5% - 11% depending of the local taxes. Tax is
charged on everything.
