Peak Moving Season Tips

What is it?

Permanent Change of Station moves are a reality of military life, and arranging for pickup and delivery of household goods between May and August can be nothing short of challenging. Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, or SDDC, executes the Personal Property mission. SDDC is the Army Service Component Command of U.S. Transportation Command and a major subordinate command to Army Materiel Command. Scheduling personal property moves can be made with your Transportation Service Provider, or TSP, either the traditional way through your local Transportation Office (TO) or Personal Property Shipping Office (PPSO) -- or by self counseling using the Move.mil website.

What has the Army done?

SDDC provided the following tips to ensure a smoother move for servicemembers, federal employees and their families during the peak moving season:
- Create a personal move calendar with checklists, phone lists, to-do lists and links
- Your TO/PPSO is your primary point of contact for customer service
- Once you get orders, immediately start your moving process for a better chance to lock in your preferred pickup and delivery dates
- Requested pickup and delivery dates are not confirmed until coordinated with your TSP
- Pack, pickup and delivery dates are scheduled on weekdays in which you or your designated representative must be available between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- A quick method for estimating your weight is to calculate 1,000 pounds per room. Another weight estimating tool can be found at move.mil
- Can request a free reweigh of personal property shipment if near or over your weight entitlement
- Move.mil is the Defense Personal Property System, or DPS, placing you in direct contact with your TSP to manage your personal property move. It is important to keep your phone number and e-mail address information updated

What is planned for the future?

- Continue educating all customers on how to effectively move personal property through DPS during the peak moving season
- Continue monitoring quality performance of TSPs

Why is it important to the Army?

The volume of shipments during the peak moving season exceeds the TSPs capacity to accommodate some requested move dates. SDDC wants to ensure it provides U.S. military personnel, and their families, valuable information to shape their expectations for a successful move during an already stressful time.
