Barstow, the nearest civilian community, has a population of
approximately 23,000 and is located 37 miles south of Fort Irwin. Located within
the city limits are ten small parks, two soccer fields, two pools (one
indoor/one outdoor), three baseball and four softball diamonds, a community
center, a sports park and a community college. A factory outlet mall
can be found just outside the city limits. A nine-hole golf course is located in
nearby Lenwood. Another nine-hole golf course is at the Marine Corps Logistics
Base.
Other nearby towns include Newberry Springs, Daggett, Helendale,
and Victorville.
Another one of Barstow's attractions is its
location. It is located two to three hours from some of California's
and Nevada's prime tourist attractions. Southern California has mountains, an
ocean, deserts, rivers, large metropolitan areas, and rural
communities. There are so many attractions that a two week vacationer
cannot begin to see them all. While Fort Irwin is somewhat remotely
located, an assignment here can afford you the opportunity to visit several of
California's many attractions. You will be living three to four hours
from destinations that tourists travel thousands of miles to see.
