The 24-hr arrival point at Great Lakes is the Quarterdeck of the command your are coming to, for assistance in contacting your sponsor and obtaining general information about the base. If arriving during duty hours, report to your unit's Commander's Support Staff/ Quarterdeck.
Initial
billeting is available at the BEQ, Navy Lodge, or local hotels. For billeting in the BEQ take one copy of your orders to Central Billeting, Building 30, to receive your room assignment. Local motel accommodations are relatively expensive. Navy Lodge has accommodations. The Navy Lodge can be contacted by calling commercial (847) 689-1485 or 1-800-NAVY INN for reservations. It is advisable not to bring any dependents until family housing is assigned or suitable off- base housing is located. Due to the lack of adequate space in the BEQ for single students and staff members, there is currently a restriction on assignment of barracks space to geographic bachelors. If you intend to relocate to Great Lakes as a geographic bachelor, consider that you most likely will be required to live on the local economy.
If you are
arriving by plane, we have a Military Information Detachment located in the USO facility at Terminal 2, O'Hare International Airport, to assist you with obtaining transportation to Great Lakes. The Continental Limo Bus service, American Taxi company and Airport Express Van service are in the baggage area at both O'Hare and Midway Airport terminals. They have a "flat rate" service/fare to Great Lakes. You must request "flat rate" otherwise, you will be charged by the mile. You can take the Metra to Downtown and transfer to Northwest Line to the Installation. Report with a good attitude; it can make or break this tour.
