There is no public transportation available on or near the base. Rental cars are available at the Airport or in Fairbanks. Keeping in close contact with your sponsor will be helpful on arrival so they can help with initial transportation needs.
Most things are within walking distance, but if you arrive in the Winter (Sept - May) keep in mind that temperatures will prohibit long walks.
Base Registration Requirements:
1. To register a vehicle on base you must have the following:
a. Proper Identification- military ID card is sufficient.
b. Proof of Ownership-Current state vehicle registration in the present owner's name or part ownership, lease agreement, power of attorney or notarized statement from owner specifying inclusive dates for use must be presented.
c. Active duty military personnel must register their vehicle in Alaska or their state of legal residence. All other personnel must have Alaska registration prior to issue of a base decal.
d. Driver's License- A valid state driver's license must be presented by the individual requesting registration. Active duty personnel will possess a valid license from their state of legal residency or the state of Alaska. All other personnel including family members must possess a valid license from the State of Alaska within 90 days of arrival.
e. Insurance-All personnel must comply with Air Force and State of Alaska Mandatory Insurance requirements and maintain valid insurance on their vehicle(s) at all times. Operators of vehicles which are registered on Eielson AFB must maintain proof of insurance in the vehicle at all times while on the installation and proof of such insurance must be produced upon demand. The Alaska Mandatory Insurance Law requires each person to maintain a minimum of $50,000 personnel liability, $100,000 personnel liability for each accident, and $25,000 property damage liability per vehicle.
f. I/M (emission) Certificate-If the vehicle is not registered in Alaska, and is not exempt from the Fairbanks North Star Borough Vehicle Emission Inspection and Maintenance Program, the registrant must have an I/M certificate of Inspection or Certificate of Waiver from the state of Alaska. The I/M certificate itself is only good for 90 days for registering vehicles. The I/M is required for registering your vehicle both on base and in the state.
Military personnel assigned as permanent party are required to register their motor vehicle, special purpose, or recreational vehicles either permanently or temporarily within 3 duty days of arrival. Request for permanent vehicle registration must be made in person at the Pass and Registration Section, building 2627, room 108.
