VEHICLE REGISTRATION (OFF BASE): The term "vehicle" includes
motorcycles, automobiles, trailers, vans, and boats regularly parked in or
garaged overnight in Colorado. To obtain Colorado license plates, you must have
verification of your motor vehicle's identification number (VIN), your title or
registration, and a current Colorado vehicle emissions test. The
license and owner's tax fee is based on vehicle age and
value. Non-resident military personnel are excluded if they have
valid license plates from their home state. Non-resident military
personnel can obtain Colorado tags for $26.80 per year if they provide proof of
non-residency (accomplished by showing a military ID card). Owner's
tax is not charged to non-residents. All vehicles need an annual emissions test
regardless of state of registration.
COLORADO DRIVER'S
LICENSES: Active duty members and their spouses and children need not obtain a
Colorado driver's license if they are 16 years of age or older and possess a
valid license from their home state or state of last
assignment. However, if spouses or children obtain employment in
Colorado, then they are required to obtain a Colorado driver's
license. A basic Colorado driver's license is
$15.60. Instruction permits are issued for $10.60, and commercial
licenses are $25.60. The cost for re-instatement of a license is
$40.00. There is a $16 (one time) charge for transferring a
motorcycle and additional $1 charge for any license that needs a motorcycle
endorsement. A USAREUR license is valid for 45 days. If
you do not possess a valid stateside license you will have to take
the written test. A social security number is needed when applying
for a permit or driver's license. Two types of ID are required to
request a permit or state ID card.
